Nigel Grout is an experienced and impartial construction professional specialising in the resolution and avoidance of disputes and contentious issues. He has spent over 35 years as a practising Quantity Surveyor working exclusively on civil engineering projects; particularly highways, structures, water, rail and infrastructure. This included 16 years predominantly site based working for national and regional UK contractors, before establishing and running successful QS practices from 1991 until 2006. His QS consultancies provided commercial support services for a number of major construction projects including the M25 road widening, London Underground Jubilee Line Extension, Channel Tunnel Rail Link and Patras Ferry Harbour in Greece.
Nigel has specialised in construction dispute resolution and avoidance since 1991, and now acts as an independent practitioner in this field. He has formal training and qualifications in international commercial arbitration, and is a panel or listed arbitrator with various international arbitral organisations. He has acted as party representative in many construction adjudications, and is an accredited adjudicator with the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and included on the Construction Industry Council Register of Adjudicators. Nigel is also a listed Expert with the Dubai International Arbitration Centre, and has been appointed as a quantum expert in arbitrations in the UK and Eastern Europe. He possesses detailed knowledge of Dispute Boards practice and procedure, and sits as a member of international dispute adjudication boards including acting as a sole member DAB. He is on the FIDIC President's List of Dispute Adjudicators, and is also approved as a dispute board member by the DB Federation and the Dispute Resolution Board Foundation. Currently an assessor for the Academy of Experts on their expert determination course. Possesses good technical skills and a sound knowledge of contract law. Has written numerous reports for clients outlining findings and reasoning based on facts and contract provisions. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Trained in mediation.
